Biographical Information

Felix Haas was Arthur G. Hansen Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Purdue University. Haas fled Europe and came to the United States in the fall of 1939 and served in the United States Army from January 1943 to March 1946. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1946 to 1952, earning a bachelor's degree in Physics in 1948, a master's degree in applied mathematics in 1949, and doctorate in mathematics in 1952. Prior to coming to Purdue in 1962, as Head of the Division of Mathematical Sciences, he was at Lehigh University, Princeton University, University of Connecticut and Wayne State University.

At Purdue, Haas was the first Dean of Science from 1963 to 1974; Provost (the second provost at Purdue) and Professor of Mathematics from 1974 to 1986. Afterward, he returned to teaching in the Department of Mathematical Science from 1986 to 1991. He considered recruiting his top priority, and is quoted as saying, "Of all the things I have done, teaching is what I have enjoyed the most".

In 2006, the Computer Science Building (also known as the Memorial Gymnasium) was renamed Felix Haas Hall.
