Scope and Contents

The John Cleland papers include materials on the Purdue University College of Agriculture and dairy making in Indiana, with a focus on the Purdue University Creamery. Materials include pre-publication manuscripts written by Cleland, Purdue Swiss-type cheese recipes, and artifacts related to the Purdue University Creamery, including: cheese and butter wrapper labels; a glass milk bottle and paper bottle caps; and a cottage cheese container.

Also included are a can of Purdue Hybrid pop corn, a program for the 58th annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association held at Purdue, and three publications by former Purdue faculty members:

Biographical Information

John M. Cleland was born on April 29, 1951, in Rochester, IN. After graduating from Rochester High School in 1969, he attended Purdue University, graduating with a B.S. in Animal Science in 1973. After graduation, John worked for Genetic Plus for five years, before spending the next 31 years teaching Biology at Zionsville High School.

In 2004, John received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, the highest honor bestowed by the governor of Indiana. In 2014, Purdue awarded him with the Department of Animal Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award. In 2018, John published “Ice Cream Cones as Casualties,” a book on the history of the Purdue Creamery. John passed away on February 7, 2022.

John’s research and collection focuses on the Purdue Creamery (1913-1969), which provided research and training opportunities to the staff and students of Purdue’s dairy program. In addition, produce created as a result of these activities, such as milk, cheese, and butter, were later sold on campus and to local grocery stores.
