Scope and Contents

The Jacqueline Wise Gershman papers were created and collected by Gershman and document her time as a student at Purdue University from 1948 until she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953. Types of materials include dance programs, many from Sigma Eta of Sigma Alpha Mu sorority dances, personal correspondence, photographs, papers, and artifacts related to student life on campus. Also included are reports and class notes from Gershman's invovlement in the science department, papers published after her graduation, and materials from the 1953 class reunion. These papers would be important for anyone interested in mid-century student life at Purdue, particularly those intertested in women's clubs and activities and women in STEM.

Biographical Information

Jacqueline Wise Gershman graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953. While at Purdue she was involved in various student organizations; Gershman served as Vice President and President of Sigma Delta Tau, President of the Women's Press Club, and a member of the Green Guard, Hillel Foundation, Scientist, and Gold Peppers. After graduation, Gershman was hired as a chemist for Colgate Palmolive. Following her time at Colgate, Gershman completeted a degree in library sciences and went on to work, and retire, as a school librarian.

Materials donated by Jacqueline Wise Gershman on August 18, 2008 and January 4, 2014.

Accruals

No further additions to the collection are expected.

Processing Information

Whenever possible, original order of the materials has been retained. All materials have been housed in acid-free folders and acid-free boxes for preservation purposes. Newspaper clippings have been photocopied and orginals have been maintained in acid-free paper. Paper clips and notes from donor have been removed and artifacts have been placed in envelopes.
