Historical Information

Richard B. Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry is a red brick building trimmed with Indiana limestone. Cut designs over the main doors symbolize 5 main branches of chemistry: balance for analytical chemistry, rat and leaf for biological chemistry, portion of periodic table for inorganic chemistry, tetrahedron for organic chemistry, and a phase diagram and thermodynamics equation for physical chemistry. There are also engraved names of 35 famous chemists along three sides of the building.
