He graduated with his PhD in physics from Purdue University in 1950. After graduation, he returned to China, dedicating over 20 years to his work on a team of scientists who developed the nuclear and hydrogen bom for China. His contributions were critical to the development of China's nuclear program. In 1999, he was posthumously awarded the National Merit Medal for his contributions to Chinese military science.

Biographical Information

Nuclear physicist Deng Jiaxian is known as China's "Father of the Atomic Bomb." He was born June 25, 1924 in Huaining, Anhui province, and died on July 29, 1986, in Beijing. Jiaxian graduated with his PhD in physics from Purdue University in 1950. After graduation, he returned to China, dedicating over 20 years to his work on a team of scientists who developed the nuclear and hydrogen bom for China. His contributions were critical to the development of China's nuclear program. He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Science. In 1999, he was posthumously awarded the National Merit Medal for his contributions to Chinese military science.
