Materials include correspondence, research materials, operational records, financial records, travel documents, conference and workshop packages, speeches, business plans, presentations, books, publications, research papers, proposals, reports, personal letters, event programs, photographs, postcards, holiday cards, instruction manuals, etc. The contents relate to Colwell's work with Canon Life Sciences Inc. and other biotechnology companies, the National Interagency Genome Science Coordinating Committee, security agencies, and other research organizations, as well as her research, projects, involvement on boards and committees, travel, and attendance at events held by prestigious institutions such as the White House and the Royal Society of Canada. Topics of her work include biotechnology, infectious diseases, human health, microbiology, cholera, bioterrorism, climate change, El-Nino, epidemiology, neuroscience, and oceanography.
