The Barbara Cook papers predominantly document Barbara Cook's career in the Dean of Women and Dean of Students office and as professor of education at Purdue University (1956 - 1989), including her leadership roles in Mortar Board and NAWDAC -- National Association of Women Deans, Administrators, and Counselors. This collection contains papers, clippings and photographs documenting Dorothy Stratton’s life, especially her role as Purdue Dean of Women and Director of the USCG SPARS.

The collection consists primarily of papers sent to or collected by Ruth Bender including letters from and clippings relating to Helen Schleman, Dorothy Stratton, and Beverly Stone. In addition, there are typed poems written by Goldeen Papenguth.

The collection consists a scrapbook given to Emma Montgomery McRae upon her retirement from Purdue in 1913 as well as two folders which contain articles and publications by Emma Montgomery McRae.  The scrapbook contains handwritten notes of praise from Purdue faculty members including Winthrop Stone, William Murray Smith, Stanley Coulter, Carolyn Shoemaker, Mary Matthews and others.

Content Description

This collection includes a collection of papers and artifacts that were collected during Helen Schleman's life and posthumously by individuals who were close to her, such as Dorothy Stratton and Betty Nelson. Some items were donated after they were removed from an exhibit on Schleman that was previously installed in Schleman Hall.

Scope and Contents The Helen Schleman papers document the life of Helen B. Schleman from her time as a student at Northwestern University in the 1920s up until her death in 1992. Much of the collection documents Schleman’s tenure at Purdue University as Head of the Women’s Residence Halls, Dean of Women, and Dean Emeritus, as well as her military service in the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARs) during World War II. Scope and Contents The Span plan records (1971-2001; 2.3 cubic feet) document the SPAN plan program at Purdue University, Dean of Women office. The collection includes brochures, pamphlets, news releases and other promotional materials which document the advertising that was done for the program.
