Earl George Maxwell was born on October 23, 1884 in Knightstown, IN. He received a B.S. in Agriculture from Purdue University in 1910. Maxwell then went to the University of Nebraska in 1914 and worked on his master's degree, which he completed in 1915.

Between earning his B.S. and M.S. degrees, Maxwell worked as an Assistant in Dairying at the University of Missouri (1910-1911), a Dairy Inspector for the State Dairy Department of Kansas (1911-1912), and a Dairyman for Swift and Company (1912-1914). During and after his studies at the University of Nebraska, Maxwell worked as an Assistant and later Instructor in Animal Husbandry (1914-1917). In 1917 he became the first county extension agent in Douglas County, serving for 12 years. Later, he administered the Clarke-McNary Tree Distribution Program for Nebraska. From 1934 until his retirement in 1952, Maxwell served as extension forester at the University of Nebraska.

Maxwell died in 1966 at the age of 82. In 1967, the Earl G. Maxwell Arboretum, 5 acres on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was named in his honor.
