Biographical Information
George L. Hoffmann entered Purdue University in the class of 1911 and received the degree of Bachelor of Science. After graduation, he remained one year as an assistant in the Department of Biology.
During the summer of 1912 he was employed as a chemist with the Chicago Board of Health and in the fall of 1912 he was engaged as a bacteriologist in the Research Laboratories of Parke, Davis & Co., of Detroit, Michigan.
In 1913 he became a graduate student with Professor W. Kolle at the University of Berne, Switzerland, receiving the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Bacteriology in 1915. Here he remained as assistant to Prof. Kolle at the Institute zur Erforschung der Infektionskrankheiten in Berne until late in 1915, when he returned, joining the staff of the Research Laboratories of the H. K. Mulford Co., of Philadelphia.
In 1917 he was appointed chief of the Department of Bacteriology and Serology of the Research Laboratories of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he remained until 1923, when he opened his private laboratory for clinical and consulting work and became Director of Laboratories of the Allegheny County Hospital.
Dr. Hoffmann was a member of: The American Chemical Society, Society of American Bacteriologists, Society of American Parasitologists, Society of Experimental Biology and Medicine, the Indiana Academy of Science, Schlaraffia, Berne, the Royal Institute of Public Health, London, and the Pittsburgh Athletic Association.
He was killed in an automobile accident by a drunk driver on July 16, 1936 in Angola, New York.
