Historical Information

The Purdue News was first published by C. A. Reynolds under the title Weekly News on January 28, 1882. By the second issue, published February 4, 1882, the name had been changed to Purdue News, and its length was doubled.

Purdue News was published weekly on Saturdays from February 4 until at least June 7, 1882, and was sold both in Kimmel’s Book Store and by mail. It accepted article suggestions and letters to the editor from Purdue students and faculty. The paper included poetry, essays, local news, personal events in the lives of students and faculty, updates on the meetings of Purdue’s literary societies and the Y.M.C.A., area business advertisements, and article exchanges with other university newspapers. There would also be occasional segments including national and international news stories, as well as histories of famous individuals, including John Purdue, William Shakespeare, and U.S. President James A. Garfield.

Starting on April 15, 1882, with the 12th issue for the Purdue News, ownership changed hands to the News Association of Purdue University. The change resulted in the slight expansion of sales with the inclusion of Stinespring’s Grocery in Chauncey as a vendor location. Papers also began calling for news on alumni beginning in the 12th issue, though the contents of the paper did not significantly change.

Production of the Purdue News stopped sometime after June 1882. It is unclear if there is any relation between Purdue News and The Purdue (1880s iteration), which began publication by the various literary societies of Purdue in November 1882.
