Scope and Contents

The John Y. D. Tse papers include, On the Theory of Profit to My Country, 1987-1989, a compilation of ten poems and memoirs written by Tse as reflections upon forty years as a management professor, a founder of the Krannert Graduate School of Business, an entrepreneur and a benefactor to Purdue University. Within the volume there are also photographs, reprints of letters written to Dr. Tse by colleagues, an address written by Tse for the 25th anniversary of the Krannert School of Management, and reprints of newspaper clippings and articles about and by Dr. Tse.

Biographical Information

Dr. John Y. D. Tse received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from St. John's University in Shanghai, China in 1944. He received his Masters of Business Administration from Stanford University in 1951. In 1957 Tse received his Doctorate of Commercial Science from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, and he was the first Chinese student to achieve this. Dr. Tse became a faculty member at Purdue University in 1957 and remained there thirty-two years. He became a Distinguished Krannert Professor, Emeritus in 1988.

While at Purdue University, Dr. Tse helped found the Krannert Graduate School of Management. He was a chairman of the Industrial Management policy committee; founding director of the Master of Science in the Industrial Administration Program; was on the Investment Advisory Committee of Purdue University and the Purdue Research Foundation; University Committee on Academic Organization; University Committee on Special Student Problems and University Library Committee.

Dr. Tse was a visiting professor at University of Birmingham, England, Faculty of Commerce; Princeton University, Ford Foundation Visiting Fellow; United Nations Consultant, Jiangsu Province, China, and Center for Science and Technology Exchange with Foreign Countries, Nanjing, China; Tieling Municipal Government, Economic Adviser, Liaoning Province, China.

Some of Dr. Tse's business consulting activities included: owner - developer, West Lafayette Hilton Inn, 1974-1979; owner - developer, Franklin Park Apartments, West Lafayette, Indiana, 1980-1982; Founder, China American Model Farm, Tieling City, Liaoning, China, 1996; consultant to Inland Container Corporation, Lake Central Airlines, Great Lakes Small Business Development Corporation, Indiana Farm Bureau and other firms. In 2006 he became a co-founder and CEO of Bio Processing Technology Inc., an Indiana corporation established for the purpose of developing commercial uses of technology invented by professor Li-fu Chen and research assistant Qin Xu, both from Purdue's food sciences department. One such technology converts corn and other grains into ethanol or food products such as corn syrup and oil.

Dr. Tse's research work has also included waste control at Corrugated Box Plants of Inland Container Corporation; Airline Fare Structure and Federal Subsidy; Capital Equipment System in an Appliance Manufacturing Firm and numerous management cases prepared for classroom teaching.

He was a member of the Mayor's Commission on Human Relations, West Lafayette, Indiana and the chairman from 1969-1970.

Dr. Tse has written numerous books including: Profit Planning Through Volume – Cost Analysis, Macmillan, New York. I Budget Flessibili, Etas Kompas, Milan, Italy. On the Theory to My Country, Jiangsu People's Press, Nanjing. Memoirs of My 48 Years in United States, 1949-1997, Henan People's Press. Tracing to My Ancestor Zhu Xi (1130-1200 AD), to the First Use of Zhu as Family Name (487 BC), and Verification of Chronology of Turnover Year of Xia, Shang, Zhou Dynasties (1900 BC, 1559 BC, 1050 BC) and of Yellow Emperor (2390 to 2291 BC). He has also written several literary works: Chinese Poems by the Resident of the Thatched House; Empress Yang Gui Fei (719-756 AD) and the New Song of Everlasting Sorrow & Love.
