The Purdue University School of Medicine collection documents the history of the short-lived School of Medicine of Purdue University, from its 1905 inception until its eventual 1908 merger with Indiana University and transformation into the current Indiana University School of Medicine. Topics covered in the collection include pre-medical courses offered at Purdue prior to 1905; early attempts by Indiana medical colleges to merge with Indiana University and Purdue University; the 1905 mergers of the Medical College of Indiana, Central College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Fort Wayne College of Medicine with Purdue University to form the "The Indiana Medical College, the School of Medicine of Purdue University;" the controversy and legal dispute between Indiana University and Purdue University over Purdue’s acquisition of and running of a medical school; and the 1908 merger of the Purdue School of Medicine with Indiana University.

Also present in the collection are material documenting the students, faculty, and course offerings of the Purdue School of Medicine, including course catalogs, registers of students, faculty and staff lists, and the student publication “The Medical Student.”

This series consists of letters discussing Purdue’s connection to medical instruction in the first decade of the 20th century. Topics include merging the Medical College of Indiana, the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Fort Wayne College of Medicine into a single School of Medicine under the direction of Purdue University; Indiana University’s pushback to Purdue’s entrance into medical instruction; and the legal disputes between Purdue University and Indiana University regarding medical instruction in Indiana.

Senders and recipients present in the collection include President W. E. Stone of Purdue, President William L. Bryan of Indiana University, faculty and staff of the three Indiana medical colleges, Purdue Board of Trustee members, and Indiana state politicians and government employees.

Also present are some university records, including appointments for committee chairmen for the School of Medicine, a list of faculty from the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons absorbed into the faculty of the School of Medicine during the merging of the two schools, and a list of faculty and lecturers for the Purdue School of Medicine during the 1907-1908 school year.

Subjects explored in the papers include early attempts to coordinate premedical courses with medical schools; merger negotiations between the Medical College of Indiana and Indiana University; merger negotiations and agreements between Purdue University, the Medical College of Indiana, the Central College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Fort Wayne College of Medicine; the legal dispute and controversy between Purdue University and Indiana University regarding medical education in Indiana; and the eventual transition of the School of Medicine to be administered fully by Indiana University.
