Biographical Information
Darrel Abel was born in Lost Nation, Iowa, in 1911. As a young man, he took all the writing courses offered through the University of Iowa's writing program, which would later be known as the Iowa Writers Workshop. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees at Iowa, then went on to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Abel had a long teaching career. He was a Fulbright professor at Freiburg University for a year and taught at the University of Saskatchewan as a visiting professor before joining the English Department at Purdue University, where he taught for thirty years. He is the author of many articles and several books on American Literature.
