These items were left by the public at the base of the Neil A. Armstrong statues outside of Armstrong Hall on Purdue University campus following Armstrong's death in 2012. The items were found together in a box in a filing cabinet inside Purdue's Armstrong Hall in October, 2022 and transferred to Purdue Archives and Special Collections October 7, 2022. Also in the filing cabinet next to this box was Neil Armstrong's student slide rule. It was accessioned separately
