Scope Note: Generally, objects or other things made or modified by humans, typically manually portable products of human workmanship, such as tools, utensils, objects for personal adornment, or art, as distinguished from natural remains. In archaeology, an artifact is an object made by a human culture and later recovered by an archaeological endeavor. In the context of museum objects, use "cultural artifact." In the context of technical and medical research, for a spurious result that is a product or effect resulting from the experimental technique or procedure itself, use "experimental artifact."
