Roy D. Bridges, Jr. submitted his first application for Space Shuttle Duty (Shuttle Pilot Program) on February 19, 1977. He was not selected the first time he applied and reapplied on October 30, 1979. He was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in May 1980. In November 1979 when informed of his selection by NASA, Bridges was assigned to Detachment 3 of the Air Force Flight Test Center, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada as a special projects officer.
