Biographical Information

Alan H. Monroe received a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University in 1924. He was hired by Purdue as Instructor in English, where he started English 14, a course which later to become Communications 114 (COM114). In 1926, Monroe became Instructor in Public Speaking, and in the 1927-28 academic year he was promoted to Assistant Professor of Public Speaking and became the head of the speech section of the English Department. Monroe also completed his Master's Degree from Northwestern in 1927. Through the late 1920s and through the 1930s, Monroe continued to teach a variety of courses; in 1936-37 these courses became known as 'Speech' rather than 'English'. In 1937, Monroe earned his Doctorate from Northwestern. In the 1940-41 academic year, Monroe was designated as Chairman of the Section of Speech in the Department of English and Speech. Years later, in 1947, Speech became a separate program. In 1963, after years of service, Monroe resigned as head of the Speech program; that same year, the Department of Audiology and Speech Science was formed at Purdue University.
