It awarded its first master’s degrees in 1922. The department conferred its first PhD in 1937 to Earl Butz, who later served as head of the department from 1946 to 1954. In 1942, the Department of Farm Management changed its name to the present Department of Agricultural Economics. In the 1960s, the department widely embraced computer technology for farm records, outlook reports, and simulation models.
