Historical Information

In 1966 Purdue University Athletic Department was under investigation by the NCAA for illegal basketball recruitment activities. Head basketball coach George King allowed an unauthorized scrimmage with potential high school recruits, paid for their dinners, and participated in "unplanned" visits to prospective players' households. The players included Perry Wallace, Charles Bavis, Charlie Coffman, and others. These actions violated NCAA rules and regulations on engaging with prospective players. The infractions were brought to the athletic director's attention, who then notified President Hovde and Associate Dean V.C. Freeman, the faculty representative on the Athletic Affairs Committee.

Freeman met with the NCAA Committee on Infractions and it was determined that these arrangments occurred under King's leadership and therefore is responsible for these incidents. Purdue University Athletic Department was placed on probation for one year. Additionally, King could not participate in any level of recruitment for a year.
