This book collection is on the history and technology of glass. Dr. Arvill Wayne Bitting graduated from Purdue University in 1891 (B.S. Agriculture). Subsequently he received a DVM degree from Iowa State College (1895) and a MD degree from the Medical College of Indiana University (1900). While at Purdue University, he was Editor-in-Chief of both the Exponent and the 1891 edition of The Debris. From 1893 to 1907 Arvill Bitting was affiliated with the University's Agricultural Experiment Station. He left Purdue in 1907 to serve as food technologist with the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry, and his wife was also employed by the Bureau. At the start of World War I, Katherine Bitting collaborated with her husband in his food specification work with the Subsistence Division of the War Department. From 1919-1922 he was research director for the Glass Container Corporation. He was director of food exhibits for the Century of Progress from 1931-1933, and the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1937. It was during his affiliation with the Glass Container Corporation that he developed an interest in the history and technology of glass. He received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Purdue in 1935. "Little wonder, then that even today there is profound and widespread ignorance as to how glass is made. It remains for most of us a mystery: and like most mysteries it is essentially very simple." - Dr. A. W. Bitting, Glass Making, ca. 1917
