Biographical Information
“Professor Young did pioneering work in establishing courses and organizing research in management, prices, and finance. His foresight resulted in a major breakthrough for research and education in farmwork simplification. "Doc" Young joined the Purdue staff in 1921 as an assistant in Farm Management and Extension. In 1929, he participated in planning and organizing the Purdue Graduate School, becoming Assistant Dean in 1933, Dean in 1942, and Vice President for Research in 1961. His peers recognized his administrative skills by electing him President of the American Farm Economics Association in 1938, American Vice President of the International Conference of Agricultural Economist, 1941-1952, and College Vice President of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers for several terms. "Doc" served as a member of numerous commissions and as a director on a number of important boards. Through his efforts, the Rockefeller Foundation provided a substantial grant to investigate applications of industrial engineering techniques to agriculture. Dr. Young was made a Fellow in the American Farm Economics Association in 1961. Upon his retirement in 1963, he was made Dean Emeritus of the Graduate School. B.S.
