Historical Information

The Office of the Provost began in 1961, when President Frederick L. Hovde established the Vice President for Academic Affairs position. The position’s title was changed to “provost” in 1971 by President Arthur G. Hansen. The provost’s title has continued to evolve over the years, with the title being “The Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Diversity” since 2014.

The Office of the Provost serves the provost, who is the chief academic officer at Purdue, reporting directly to the president. They are responsible for all academic affairs, including programs, student academics, and faculty matters such as appointments, tenure, and promotions. The provost is also the chief diversity officer at Purdue, and is responsible for developing and implementing programs that contribute to the diversity, inclusion, and belonging of all members of Purdue’s campus.
