Biographical Information

Ruth Viola Ward Freehafer authored a biography of R. B. Stewart in addition to many articles for newspapers and women's magazines. She also wrote the lyrics to "What Makes Indiana Great" sung by the Purdue Men's Glee Club. She was married to Lytle J. Freehafer, vice president and treasurer of Purdue.

R. B. Stewart began his work at Purdue as the controller; by the time he retired in 1961, he had become Vice President and Treasurer. Stewart’s pioneering methods of financing expansion through trust gifts and interest-free bonds enabled Purdue to grow and become a model for other universities. Stewart was also known as a “Father of the G.I. Bill,” the post-World War II training programs that brought thousands of returning veterans to campuses across the country.

Stewart Center on Purdue's West Lafayette campus is named for him.
