Scope and Contents

The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program records documents the creation, evolution, and activities of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program (known as Women’s Studies Program until 2013) through administrative records and other materials produced by the program. The recprds also include as well as reference material, such as clippings and publications, collected by members of the department. Of particular interests to researchers may be the meeting minutes and departmental newsletters that document the process of the field of Women’s Studies entered into the University system. The collection of curriculum, syllabi, and teaching portfolios will be of interest to researchers of pedagogy.

Historical Information

Purdue University’s Women’s Studies Program first started in 1979 when the first Intro to Women’s Studies class was offered. At that time, the program was known as the Committee on Women's Studies. The program expanded and began running a curated film series, conferences, and festivals. The program later added an undergraduate minor (1983), a graduate minor (1995), and an undergraduate major (2004). The name of the program changed to the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program in 2013.

Custodial History

In 1984, the Women’s Center, Helen Schleman, and Kathryn P. Johnsen all donated files and books to the Women’s Studies Program. Many of those files predate the origin of the Women’s Studies Program, but are included in this collection.

Acqusition Information

Materials transferred by the Women's Studies Department via Julie Knoeller on January 10, 2013 and Teasha McKinley, Program Coordinator, on July 1, 2014. Additional materials belonging to the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program were found in the College of Liberal Arts records accession in May, 2019. These items were integrated into the collection.

Separated Materials

Papers relating to the Sisters for Health Education (S.H.E.) were removed and described as MSP 150, Sisters for Health Education records.

A bulletin of Purdue University titled "Purdue trains women to serve in war and peace" was removed and is located in the Reading Room.

Series 7, Helen Schleman Files, was separated from the collection and processed into MSF 334 Helen B Schleman papers. This separation included all of boxes 24-28 and 31-32. The remaining boxes in the collection have not been renumbered yet.

Processing Information

The original order of the materials has been retained whenever possible. Materials created by the Sisters for Health Education were separated and described as their own collection. A bulletin of Purdue University was placed in the Reading Room with other Purdue publications. External publications that are widely available through other institutions were removed and discarded. A detailed list of these publications is available in the Collection File. Four 3 1/2 inch floppy disks were discarded as the information was not recoverable. Duplicate or redundant photographs, budget and financial records, professional or commercial films and floppy disks containing materials related to departmental newsletters were disposed.
