Student photo album, 1930s
Scope and Contents
The Student photo album, 1930s (1933-1940, 0.2 cubic feet) documents the activities of a student at Purdue University in the 1930s. In addition to pictures of Purdue campus buildings, there are pictures of the student and several friends in various settings around greater Lafayette and various other cities. The creator of the album is currently undetermined. However, judging from the subject matter within the album he was likely involved with the ROTC at Purdue as well as a member of Phi Kappa Sigma. The creator is pictured several times throughout the album, labeled only as “me”. There are several other individuals in the album who are named, usually by surname only. Additional pictures document participation in ROTC and farm work, as well as the Winnie Mae airplane. On the last two pages of the album, there are ticket stubs from several different sporting events at Purdue and in Chicago. Early pictures in the album indicate that the creator of the album attended Pullman Technical High School in Chicago, Illinois and may have belonged to the class of 1933 there. This collection might be useful for researchers interested in Purdue University and its buildings, Phi Kappa Sigma, ROTC in the 1930s, material culture of the post-depression era, extracurricular activities of students in this era, and the history of the Purdue Airfield and the Winnie Mae. Types of materials include: black and white photographs, photo album, and ticket stubs. In a separate folder, there are photocopies of photographs that were previously removed from the album; these copies are of individual pictures as well as the pictures in page context (before they were removed from the album by a previous owner). Photos that have come loose from the album pages have been sleeved and remain where they were found in the album.
