Abstract

Reports, directory, and pamphlet pertaining to the Department of Food Science

Biographical or Historical Information

The Department of Food Science was created in 1983 from the Food Sciences Institute, which included nine faculty members drawn from the Horticulture, Animal Science, Agronomy, and Agricultural and Biological Engineering Departments.  Food Sciences was first headed by Dr. Philip Nelson, a prominent developer in aseptic processing.  Under Nelson’s leadership witnessed the formation of the Industrial Associates group, the creation of annual Aseptic Workshop event, and the building of the 122,000-square foot Food Science Building.  The Food Science Building was renamed the Philip E. Nelson Hall of Food Science in July 2010 in honor of the department’s first head and his contributions to Purdue University and the American food industry.  Nelson was succeeded by current department head Dr. Suzanne Nielsen in 2003.
