This collection consists of the papers of John Houkes. Materials primarily relate to the Purdue Business School (Krannert School of Business) and the Management and Economics Library, including the Krannert Special Collection of books on economics history. Biographical Information

John M. "Dutchman" Houkes was born in 1922. After a ten-year business career working for a Dutch steamship line, joined the Purdue Libraries as the first head of the Management and Economics Library. During his tenure he built the rare books collection and compiled A Catalogue of Rare Books, Pamphlets and Journals on Business and Economics in the Krannert Library Special Collection 1500-1870. Using this collection as his primary resource library, he compiled this exhaustive bibliographic work on usury. Houkes was the first Head of the Krannert School of Management's Special Collection of Literature in Business and Economic History of the Purdue University in Indianapolis, Indiana. After his active life as a professor at Purdue, he and his wife, Maxence, retired to Naples, Florida. Houkes died there on December 10, 2006.
