Biographical Information

Raymond William Schalk was born on August 12, 1892 to Herman and Sophia Schalk in Harvel, Illinois. He dropped out of high school after his second year to become a printer. After several years Schalk left printing and began playing professional baseball. He played catcher for a local baseball team and eventually worked his way up to play for the Milwaukee Brewer’s Association during the 1911 and 1912 seasons. His was scouted by the Chicago White Sox, who then hired him for the remainder of the 1912 season.

Schalk’s career with the White Sox lasted until 1928, and he spent the last two years as a player and manager. Over the next two decades, Schalk worked for the New York Giants, Chicago Cubs, Buffalo Bisons, and Milwaukee Brewer’s Association. In 1947 he became an assistant baseball coach at Purdue, where he remained until his retirement in 1965.

In recognition of his achievements as a player Schalk was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
