Scope and Contents

The Aubrey H. and Doris M. Smith papers contain Aubrey Smith's certificates and letters of recognition for distinguished service to Purdue, a train ticket from 1945, as well as his notebook, masters thesis,doctoral gown, and collection of materials relating to Purdue including a commencement brochure and an issue of the Purdue Alumnus. The papers also contain Doris M. Smith's copy of the Purdue Women's Club program and her notes, poems, and essays from Education 410 and English 551 classes taught at Purdue.

Biographical Information

Aubrey H. Smith was a professor of mathematics at Purdue University from 1935 to 1972. He received his Bachelors of Science from Mount Allison in 1925, his Masters from Brown in 1928, and his PhD also from Brown in 1932. At Purdue, he devoted considerable effort to establish the Mathematical Sciences Library.

Doris M. Smith graduated from Brown where she met Aubrey, and the two married. She took English and Education classes at Purdue and was a member of the Purdue Women's Club. She and her husband were very active in Purdue activities.

Aubrey passed away in 1996 at the age of 90, and Doris in 2005 at 94.

Acquisition Information

Collection donated in 2005 by the Aubrey H. Smith and Doris M. Smith estate.

Processing Information

All materials have been rehoused in acid free folders and boxes and organized by topic. Staples and paper-clips have been removed and replaced with plastic clips.
