Global Product Compliance Laboratory, 1979 - 2003

 Sub-Series — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSA 291, Series 2, Sub-Series 3

Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains materials related to Heirman’s time as the manager of the Global Product Compliance Laboratory (GPCL) at Bell Labs from the 1980s to 1990s. The purpose of the lab was to ensure that electronic products were compliant with domestic and international regulations in three areas: electromagnetic compatability, product safety, and telecommunications network accessibility. Also included, are materials that document the planning and establishment of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test facilities, which Heirman assisted with in the late 1970s.

Throughout the 1990s, Heirman became the senior EMC consultant and began teaching courses and hosting workshops more frequently. He often presented on topics related to EMC engineering, building EMC test facilities, and meeting international test standards from agencies, such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and European Union.

As manager of GPCL, Heirman was also responsible for general management duties, such as managing budgets, hiring workers, complying with regularly scheduled audits, and organizing meetings internal to the Environmental Health and Safety department.

The sub-series includes test reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, presentations, research papers, and conference proceedings related to maintaining product compliance.
