Scope and Contents
The Purdue University College of Engineering records document the historical background of the College; included are many historical documents, annual reports, pamphlets, publicity, department brochures, pamphlets, and programs, newsletters, publications, alumni information and various related material.
Some items of note are key historical documents from the earliest Purdue Engineering Laboratories, such as the Locomotive and Automobile Test Laboratories. Also included is information related to the fire that destroyed the Engineering Laboratory (Heavilon Hall) three days after it opened in January 1894. Other historical information includes the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, A. A. Potter Building (named for the former dean of engineering at Purdue, Andrey Abraham Potter; Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, and the Hillenbrand Biomedical Center, among others.
Information from the earliest curriculum material, Purdue WW II program brochures, and faculty research information can also be found among the records. Program information, such as the Engineering Extension Service, which began in 1922 to help the citizens of Indiana, along with the Technical Information Service, founded in the 1980s are also found among the records.
Within the Engineering alumni series, there are index cards with biographical information on some of the first graduates of the Schools of Engineering. There are also programs from the distinguished alumni awards, which contain biographical information on some of the most prominent engineering alumni, including the Purdue alumni astronauts.
