Scope and Contents

The next phase of Craig's career was at NASA Headquarters as Acting Assistant Administrator, Exploration (September 1989 - February 1990) and then as Director, Space Exploration (Special Assistant for Exploration), Office of Aeronautics, Exploration and Technology (February 1990 - September 1991). He led NASA's planning and research to establish a lunar base and to send humans to Mars, and led coordination with the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health; served as NASA's principal Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) liaison with the White House National Space Council, and drafted the initial Space Council SEI policy.
