Scope and Contents
From the Series: Most items within this series are the research files and papers collected for Grandt’s co-authored book, One Small Step: the History of Aerospace Engineering at Purdue. The book was written by Grandt, W. A Gustafson, and Lawrence T. Cargnino upon the 50th anniversary of the Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AAE). Included are photographs and biographical information of faculty and AAE staff. There are documents related to key moments in AAE history, laboratories, wind tunnels, aircraft, classes and classroom photographs, clubs, construction of the Purdue Airport, World War II activities and curriculums, Navy V-12 Program, Curtiss-Wright Cadette activities and curriculum, School pamphlets, and an autographed photograph of astronauts, Grissom, Chaffee, and White – casually dressed in front of Apollo I. Also included is pertinent correspondence, School of AAE enrollment and research information, information on the earliest graduates of the School of AAE, clippings, material collected in regards to the Purdue alumni astronauts and other alumni, and a copy of, “Aeronautical Engineering at Purdue University from 1950 to 1960, L.T. Cargnino, Professor Emeritus, School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Purdue University, May 1989.” Lastly, there is additional AAE historical material that was compiled for the revision of One Small Step: the history of Aerospace Engineering at Purdue University, which was published in 2010. The series ends with a DVD containing photographs from a presentation Grandt gave on the Purdue School of AAE’s history and his retirement reception in 2016.
