Scope and Contents

This series (1922 – 2007; 6.5 cubic feet) documents the history of more than 40 fraternities governed by the Interfraternity Council. Documents pertain to the foundation and administration of the chapters (e.g. constitution and by-laws, annual reports) as well as rush and pledging materials from various decades. Membership and alumni information can be found in most chapter documents. The majority of the documents are correspondence regarding award applications, event procedures, rushing and pledging information, disciplinary and administrative aspects, as well as housing capacities. Greek publications such as chapter newsletters, Greek Week and Information Booklets are also interspersed throughout the series.

Access Information

Series is open for research but some material has been restricted. This restricted material was removed from Series 2, Sub-series 2, Boxes 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12. Material in boxes 2-11 has been moved to box 25 (restricted) and materials removed from box 12 have been moved to box 26 (restricted).

Historical Information

Purdue’s fraternity system is one of the oldest and largest in the country. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) functions as the administrative and governing body of the Purdue fraternity system, with the IFC Executive Committee as its administrative body, the Presidents Council as the legislative body and the Judicial Board as its judicial body. IFC also offers services to the fraternities, such as rushing, publicity, and scholarships.

Arrangement

The series is divided into two sub-series:
  1. General Interfraternity Council Records (1933 -1988; 1.4 cubic feet). This sub-series contains general documents pertaining to activities, policies, and events of the Interfraternity Council.
  2. Interfraternity Council Chapters (1922 - 2007; 5 cubic feet). This sub-series contains documents pertaining to 43 fraternities governed by IFC.

Processing Information

Some folders and documents from boxes 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, that contained private student information were removed and returned to the donor.
