Scope and Contents
Contains correspondence, papers, reports, and other materials relating to Savage’s involvement with the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center and Friends of Psychiatric Research. Friends of Psychiatric Research is a non-profit organization that came about after an article appeared in the Baltimore Sun in 1955 that detailed the inadequacy of mental health care system in Maryland. Friends of Psychiatric Research was based at the Spring Grove State Hospital. The Veteran’s Administration approached Friends of Psychiatric Research during this time to initiate lithium carbonate clinical trials with 600 patient volunteers. It appears from Savage’s papers that he was involved with many aspects of these organizations and this study.

Collection is open for research; however, portions of the collection are restricted to protect the privacy of patients. Papers from the collection containing patient names and other personal information are restricted for seventy-five years from the date of their creation. Redacted photocopies of this material has been put in place of the originals.
