Bell Laboratories, 1965 - 2003

 Series — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSA 291, Series 2

Scope and Contents

This series consists of materials that document Donald Heirman’s thirty year career working for Bell Laboratories in Holmdel Township and Whippany, New Jersey beginning in 1965. The earliest materials include notes and assignments from professional development coursework Heirman completed during the first decade he was employed by Bell Labs. Spanning from the 1970s to the early 1980s are technical memorandums, work reports, and correspondence related to research projects Heirman assisted with or led. These included work with the United States Navy on Project Sanguine and the Distant Early Warning Line, as well as commercial lab work, where he completed low frequency inductive interference surveys on telephone lines and established an RF field survey program.

The bulk of the series consists of materials related to Heirman’s position as the manager of the Global Product Compliance Laboratory (GPCL), which he helped found in the early 1980s. Beginning in 1976, he helped plan and design the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test facilities used by GPCL to maintain product compliance with the FCC. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he was responsible for managing the GPCL department. These materials consist of meeting minutes, correspondence, presentations, research papers, and conference proceedings related to maintaining product compliance.
