Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains contains Neil Armstrong's United States Navy Officer Service Record, and includes everything from his "Orders; chargeable against appropriation ‘Officer Candidate Training,’ April 18, 1949" through "Certificate, Honorable Discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States of America, United States Navy, October 21, 1960."

Located in folder five are photocopies of Armstrong'’s [CNATRA] (Chief of Naval Air Training) - Aviation Training Summaries and Evaluations, 1949-1950. The summaries and evaluations give a detailed account of his training and progression as an aviator at this time and include comments from his instructors.

Arrangement

The military file has been retained as set forth in Navy regulations (see folder 3, item 7). This file was placed at the beginning of the series, to provide researchers’s with an overall view of his military record.

Processing Information

The material has been removed from the original file for preservation purposes, but the order has been retained as set forth in Navy regulations (see folder 3, item 7). Many of the original documents had been stapled together, and due to preservation purposes, the staples were removed. Those documents that had been stapled were retained in the order in which they were grouped (stapled).
