This collection contains 12 boxes of personal papers of Richard O. Covey related to his time as a Purdue University student, service in the United States Air Force, and career as a NASA astronaut. The collection includes materials related to Covey's various NASA assignments including as a T-38 chase pilot; as an astronaut for Shuttle missions STS 51-I to deploy communications satellites, STS 26 in 1988 - the first flight following the Challenger accident, STS-38 in 1990 - a Department of Defense mission, and STS 61 flown in 1993 as the Hubble Space Telescope service and repair mission. Types of materials in the collection include personal work journals; mission and crew reports; NASA memorandum including a collection of John Young memos; Shuttle training, procedures, and policy documents; photographs and crew memorabilia; astronaut guidelines documents; safety reports; launch family and guest materials; diplomas, certificates, and awards; plans of study, internship, and orientation materials; and speeches.
