Biographical Information
Robert Liddell Lowe was born in Cameron, Texas, October 25, 1908. He received an A.B. from Baylor University in 1927; A.M. from University of Colorado in 1929, and an A.M. from Princeton in 1942, followed by a Ph.D. in 1947. He became an instructor of English at Purdue University and was later promoted to assistant professor, 1929-1940. He was on leave from Purdue from 1941-1948, as an officer-instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, from 1942-1946. He was a visiting assistant professor at Williams College, 1947-1948. He returned to Purdue in 1948 and was later promoted from associate professor to professor and taught until 1975. He became emeritus professor of English 1975-.
Professor Lowe's main areas of research were nineteenth century and modern English literature; Matthew Arnold. He published the Liable Tree and Other Poems in 1981, and he authored many scholarly publications.
Professor Lowe died May 23, 1983.
