Biographical Information

Pearl Coggeshall was born in 1890 in Pennville, Indiana to Harve Coggeshall and Clara Regester. She attended high school in Pennville, in spite of her mother thinking it a waste of time. After high school, Pearl remained in Pennville, where she worked as a switchboard operator, an elementary school teacher, and a nurse in a local doctor's office. Pearl met her husband, William Child, through the doctor's office and they married in 1914. They lived in New York and Canada before ultimately returning to Pennville to run a hatchery and poultry farm, and had two daughters together.

Child enrolled at Purdue University in 1912 to earn a Home Economics teaching license. She attended Purdue from 1912-1913. Although she earned her teaching license and taught home economics and elementary classes until she was 76, Child had never received her Bachelor's Degree. In 1978, after seeing her children and grandchildren complete degrees, she contacted Purdue to see if she could still earn a Bachelor's degree. Child died in 1980 at the age of 90.
