biographical statement

Wayne Pearson Rothgeb was born on October 12, 1920, and grew up on a farm in Northeastern Indiana. He dreamed of becoming a pilot, being inspired by Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927. At the age of 16, he went on his first airplane ride. During the 15 minute ride, Wayne decided that he would join the Army Air Corps. He worked his way through two years of college at Purdue University, and in July of 1941 was accepted as an aviation cadet. Wayne was called to serve on December 31, 1941, reporting to Baer Field in Fort Wayne.

Wayne later became a well known farm broadcaster for WKJG-TV and WOWO Radio in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
