Janet Lee Vaughn was born on March 28, 1934 in Waterman, Illinois. She graduated from DeKalb Township High School, DeKalb, Illinois, in 1952. Vaughn graduated from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956, majoring in home economics education. She obtained her Master of Science degree in Home Economics from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana in 1960, majoring in home management and family economics.

Vaughn served on active duty as an officer of the United States Army Reserve, Women's Army Corps, at Fort McClellan, Alabama, from 1956 to 1958. She was a home management specialist for the Vermont Agricultural Extension, Burlington, Vermont, from 1959 to 1961.

Vaughn was a graduate instructor at Purdue University in the Home Management and Family Economics Department, while completing work toward the Doctor of Philosophy degree with a major in home management and family economics and minors in education and research methods. She was awarded her Ph.D. from Purdue in 1967. She was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron, Kappa Delta Pi and Omicron Nu.

Janet passed away in DeKalb, Illinois on July 12, 2012.
