Biographical Information

Beverley Waugh Bond, Jr., was Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Cincinnati and the former president of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association.

Bond was born in 1881 and died on February 1, 1961. A native of Virginia, he earned his A.M. from Randolph-Macon College in 1901. He earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1905. He taught briefly at the University of Mississippi and Southwestern Presbyterian University before joining the faculty at Purdue University. There he was an associate professor of history and economics from 1907 to 1920.

In 1920, Bond went to the University of Cincinnati, where he soon advanced to professor of history and served as head of the department until his retirement in 1948. Through his scholarly publications (the best-known of which are The Civilization of the Old Northwest (1934); Foundations of Ohio (1941); and The Correspondence of John Cleves Symmes (1956)), he became a recognized authority on the history of the Northwest Territory.

Through his promotion of the work of the Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio and his establishment of its quarterly Bulletin in the 1940s, Bond made a notable contribution in preserving the records and disseminating information on the history of Cincinnati and the surrounding region.

An active participant in the affairs of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, Bond was an elected member of its executive committee from 1924 to 1927; president of the Association in 1931-1932; ex-officio member of the executive committee from 1932 to 1938; and a member of the board of editors of the Review, 1926-1929, and again in 1937-1938.
