Biographical Information

Phyllis Mary Baker Mortland was born in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1922 to Elsie and Clarence Baker. Her father was a Professor of Horticulture at Purdue University and her mother was an accomplished pianist. Baker attended Purdue University and earned a degree in Physics (1944). Baker was fascinated by airplanes and Amelia Earhart. She met Earhart when she was a teenage living in West Lafayette and wrote an article about her which was published.

Phyllis Baker married Max Mortland, a professor at Michigan State University, and they had four children. She played piano her entire life and was a member of the Lansing Symphony in Michigan and a neighbourhood music teacher.
