Henry Frederick Schricker was born on August 30, 1883 in North Judson, Indiana to Bavarian immigrants. He attended public school in Starke County until 1897, when he finished the 8th grade. Schricker would then work in his family's grocery and mercantile store until 1905, when he began reading the law under local attorneys, and served as a clerk for the Starke County Circuit Court. Schricker would be accepted to the Indiana state bar in 1906.
From 1906 to 1908, Schricker worked as a cashier for a small bank in Hamlet, Indiana, before purchasing the Starke County Democrat, a weekly newspaper published in Knox, Indiana. He ran the paper until 1919, when he sold it and returned to banking as a cashier at the Farmers Bank and Trust in Knox.
Schricker's first successful foray into Indiana politics occurred in 1932, when he joined the Indiana General Assembly as a senator from Starke County. After completing his first term in the state senate, Schricker would serve as Indiana Lieutenant Governor under M. Clifford Townsend, from 1937-1940. Schricker would then go on to serve as Indiana Governor from 1941-1944 and again from 1949-1952, becoming the first person to serve two terms as Governor.
Schricker retired from politics in 1953, following his second term as Governor. He would return to Knox, Indiana, where he would remain until his passing on December 28, 1966.
