Catherine Belle Weaver Beauchamp was a Purdue alumna (BSSc 1926), home economics teacher, college professor, federal government employee, and founder of an arts center in Osceola County, Florida.
Catherine Belle Weaver was born in 1904 in Lafayette, Indiana and attended Purdue University, where she graduated in 1926 with a Bachelor of Science, focusing on home economics. After graduation, Weaver worked as a librarian at Jefferson High School, where she had attended high school. Shortly after taking this position, she was hired as a home economics teacher at Warsaw High School in Warsaw, Indiana.
While in Warsaw, Weaver met her future husband, George E. Beauchamp, whom she married on August 20, 1940. She continued in her position at the high school until she became pregnant with their first child and had to resign. George and Catherine had two children together, George Jr. and Jo Berta.
Catherine Weaver Beauchamp held many interests and continued her education while raising her and George's two children. She attended classes at Manchester College, where her husband George worked, and eventually took over his position as head of the speech department when he went on leave. The couple later moved to Washington, DC, where Catherine held careers in the Department of Agriculture, setting up wartime food savings programs for schools and the Industrial Hygiene Division of the US Public Health Service. When the couple moved to Kissimmee, FL, she became a realtor and later served as a member of Osceola County's Commission on the Status of Women. In addition, she wrote and published two books about her family history, "Family ties and tales" and "What's happened in Osceola County."
The Beauchamp's were integral in the creation of Kokomo Junior College during their time in Indiana and in the founding of the Osceola County Center for the Arts in Florida. As a benefactor and founder, the theater bears Catherine W. Beauchamp's name.
