Biographical Information

Helen Jeanne Purinton earned her Ph.D. in chemistry from Purdue University in 1943. During her doctorate, Purinton oversaw "Home Management House #4" as part of her degree.

After receiving her Ph.D., University of New Hampshire hired Purinton, now Helen Purinton Shimer, as a faculty member in the chemistry department (1943-1950's). Mansfield State College (now Mansfield University) in Pensylvannia subsequently hired Shimer as a professor of foods and nutrition, where she stayed until her retirement (1966-1978).

Helen Purinton married twice, becoming Helen Purinton Shimer and later Helen P.S. Jackson. She had one son in her first marriage, Charles Purinton Shimer.

She passed away in 1994.
