Biographical Information

H. Jay Melosh was born June 23, 1947 in Patterson, New Jersey. He recieved a Bachelors' degree in physics from Princeton University in 1969 and a PhD in Physics and Geology from Caltech in 1972. Jay Melosh was University Distinguished Professor of the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at Purdue University from 2009 until his death in 2020. He served on the faculty of the University of Arizona 1982-2009, with prior faculty appointments at Caltech and the State University of New York Stonybrook. Melosh was known for his research on impact cratering and the role impacts have played on Earth and in the solar system. He was an active member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Geophysical Union, Geological Society of America, and the Meteoritical Society.
