McCarthy, Gerald D. (Gerald Duane)

Biographical Information

Gerald D. McCarthy, professor and administrator, was born in Alton, Iowa. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954. In 1967 he received his Master of Science degree from George Washington University. He also attended the National War College in 1972-1973 and prior to that, the Naval War College.

McCarthy initially came to Purdue as part of the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps unit. He was in this unit for five years with the last three as commanding officer and professor of naval science. He retired from the Navy in 1978 with the rank of captain after 24 years of active service. A significant part of this career was in the submarine service.

In 1980, McCarthy joined the faculty of the Department of Supervision of Purdue University School of Technology and in 1989 he became the head of the department.
