Biographical Information
Birch Evans Bayh was a senator from Indiana. Bayh attended Purdue University and graduated from the School of Agriculture in 1951. Bayh was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and represented Indiana from 1963-1981.
In the 1970s, Bayh helped redraft the Equal Rights Amendment which aimed to establish equal rights for men and women under the U.S. Constitution. After its redrafting, the amendment passed the U.S. House and Senate but failed to be ratified before the deadline. Bayh also authored Title IX and was influential in its addition to the Higher Education Act, giving women equal opportunities in public education.
